18. How Many Summers Do You Have Left?

A couple of years ago I wrote down all the places I wanted to go with my children during summer vacation. I was then shocked to realize there were more places than years before my children were 18.

It was kind of a terrible reminder. Children grow up.IMG_1148This little boy would not swim without a face mask covering his nose. Until one day he did.

IMG_0955Sometimes those family trips in the car felt like they would never ever ever ever end…until they do.

18 summers!??? Does that feel like forever? Oh yes…especially on a boring, hot humid day where the house is an absolute disaster and no one cleans up and you’re going crazy.

But I only have four summers left with this girl still at home.

It’s not a guilt trip. Just a reminder: make this summer a good one.

Love this post! My oldest is going to college in the fall. Amazing how quickly these 18 years have gone by!

  • This IS a great post!
My girls are now 17 and 14, so we are running out of years. Last summer, we took the girls to Cardiff, Wales; London, England; and Paris, France. It was a dream of a lifetime to actually travel abroad with our daughters, who were a) old enough to do it b) old enough to enjoy it c) old enough to appreciate what they were seeing.

This summer, we are going nowhere. Daughter #1 is in the pit orchestra of our local drama club and has rehearsals all through July. Daughter #2 is in the marching band and has mandatory band camp most of August. My husband was supposed to be in Japan on business the last 2 weeks of June, but that was postponed to an indeterminate time in July and/or August.

We are going nowhere. We’re losing one whole summer vacation. 🙁

You know what! I started to comment and then it turned into such a long thing that I just copied and pasted it into my own blog, and made a post out of it. Thank you for the inspiration. Essentially what I said was, “I totally agree…18 years goes by way too fast.”

I wrote a post last June called “Eighteen Summer,” and it was similar to your thoughts here. I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately, and it helps me put things in perspective and really cherish those long (sometimes very long) summer days with the kids.

You did it again. I’m tearing up. One night, my husband said to me just after I turned out my light, “You know, we only have four more years with Alex.”
Great. I was supposed to sleep after that?
    Lovely pictures, beautiful words.
Yes, even though I struggle to find writing time in the summer, I will enjoy every minute with my kiddos. (Ok, let’s be honest, I will TRY to enjoy MOST minutes with my kiddos. 😉 )
