I’m a sucker for a good chocolate-chip cookie.
I feel the pull often…the need for spoonfuls of chocolate chip cookie dough and a warm cookie right from the oven. Add a glass of milk and my life feels perfectly complete.
My favorite? Chocolate-chip oatmeal. Whoever came up with the original chocolate-chip cookie recipe, I bow to you.
Not all recipes are created equal. I don’t like to mess around, substitute applesauce for butter, or try to “lighten” up all that much. The chocolate-chip cookie is good just the way it was created; leave the perfect cookie alone.
I heard about the avocado. At Easter, my brother-in-law put it in a birthday cake. Remember? I was excited. For both the resurrection and the avocado cake.
And so my brain thought. Could it be? Could an avocado make it’s way into my chocolate chip oatmeal cookie and not thwart true love?
The original recipe? 2 sticks butter. Revised recipe? 1 stick butter, 1 small ripe avocado

Let’s take the plunge. Together.
Adding some white sugar. I decided I wouldn’t mess with any other part of the recipe, just the buttuh’
Brown sugar, 2 eggs and vanilla
Flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and oatmeal. I was worried about a green cookie, but it lightened up with all that white.
Looks like the real deal, doesn’t it, huh? huh? Is the avocado winning you over, too?
Look Sally, Look Jane! It looks like real cookie dough.
And I can tell you the most important part: It tastes like it too. I handed out spoons to children and they licked and smacked their lips like hungry sharks.
It’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it?
They baked on a convection setting and interestingly, were thicker and puffier than usual. Was it the weather or the avocado? I’m not sure.
Usually this recipe (rumored to be the Mrs. Field’s recipe but I’m not going to check) spreads thinner, especially in high humidity.
We of course had to taste test.
I felt sick. In a good way.
I brought them to a cook-out and crowed like Peter Pan. Who is green, too. Too bad he didn’t have a mother who made him chocolate-chip, oatmeal, avocado cookies. Boys, find your mamas. Give her an avocado.
Chocolate-Chip Oatmeal Avocado Cookie
1 stick Butter (1/2 Cup)
1 small Avocado (very ripe)
3/4 Cup Granulated Sugar
3/4 Cup Brown Sugar
1 tsp Vanilla
Add gradually (mixed together in a bowl):
2 Cups Flour
1/2 tsp Salt
1 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Baking Soda
2 1/2 Cups Rolled Oats (not quick oats)
1 Bag Chocolate-Chips
350 degrees (or 325 Convection Bake) 8-10 minutes
*Did you know the Avocado is a SUPER FOOD? Dr. Frank Lipman lists the Avocado as one of the 9 super foods. Many people avoid it b/c they think it’s fatty, but it’s simply too nutritious to skip. It’s loaded with healthy fat, vitamins and minerals that fight all those nasty diseases like cancer and heart disease.
*Dr. Oz has said rolled oats are a super food.
This information, once and for all, completely justifies my consumption of chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. With a side of avocado.
